SHOOTING RANGE
WEST BARNSTABLE CONSERVATION AREA
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 6, 2009
For shooting range use, the following hours of operation shall apply:
Monday through Saturday: 8:00am - closing ½ hour before sunset
Sundays and Holidays: 10:00am - closing 5:00pm, or ½ hour before
sunset, whichever comes 1st
Important Notices: Range must be vacated by closing time

Town of Barnstable Shooting Range:
The Town of Barnstable Conservation Commission's goal is to provide a safe and affordable
public shooting range, following best management practices. The range is open for residents,
nonresidents and law enforcement agencies for a fee and is located in the West Barnstable
Conservation Area, off the service road. The range is managed by the Conservation Commission
and policed and maintained by the Marine and Environmental Affairs Division.
The public shooting range in the West Barnstable conservation area is open for target shooting
subject to the following rules and regulations:
A. All persons utilizing the public shooting range at the West Barnstable Conservation Area shall
possess (or be accompanied by a person possessing) a range use permit.
B. The range use permit shall be displayed on the outer clothing of the permit holder.
C. Issuance of permit.
(1) Permits are available at the Marine and Environmental Affairs Division, 1189 Phinney's
Lane, Centerville, MA, at the following fees:
(a) Resident: issued to Town of Barnstable residents, domiciled in the Town, and/or
taxpayers who pay real estate taxes of the Town: $32.50.
(b) Nonresident: issued to residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts: $65.
(c) Institutional: issued to law enforcement agencies: $50 per day.
(2) Individual permits will be issued only to those persons possessing a valid
Massachusetts firearms identification card or Massachusetts license to carry firearms.
D. Individual permits shall be valid for a period of two years, commencing June 1. The permit
term expires May 31, 2006. [Amended 1-20-2005 by Order No. 2005-040]
E. Each person issued a range use permit shall also receive a gate key. Said key is
nontransferable and shall not be duplicated. Permit/key holders shall be responsible for the
security of the gate upon entering and exiting the range area. Replacement fee for a lost key
shall be $6.
F. The use of shotguns is prohibited on the rifle and pistol ranges.
G. The use of lead shot is prohibited on the shotgun range.
H. Direction of fire shall be toward the target backstop only.
I. No person shall possess or be under the influence of any alcoholic beverages or drugs, or
discard any can, bottle or rubbish within the area of the shooting range. Persons found
shooting at cans, bottles or rubbish shall be held responsible and may be charged and
prosecuted for violations of this regulation.
J. No person shall deface, molest or destroy any sign, yard marker or other structures.
K. Only standard targets shall be used. All target materials, shells, etc., shall be removed from
the area after use.
L. Hours.
(1) Monday to Saturday: Range hours shall be from 8:00 a.m. until 1/2 hour before sunset.
(2) Sunday: Range hours shall be from 10:00 a.m. until 1/2 hour before sunset.
M. Automatic weapons use (excepting that of the Barnstable Police Department) is
prohibited on Sundays.
§ 702-3. Penalties: The Barnstable Conservation Commission may determine, based on severity
of the violation, to use one or all of the following to discourage future violations:
• Violation of the above regulations shall be punishable by a fine of not more than
$300.
• Conservation staff or Natural Resource Officers may elect to enforce violations
by using the non-criminal process established by MGL C. 40 § 21D.
• Violations may result in revocation of all range permits after a hearing by the
Conservation Commission.
§ 702-4. Enforcement officers.
These rules and regulations are promulgated under MGL Chapter 40, § 8C, and shall be enforced
by police officers, Natural Resource Officers and such other agents or officers as may be
designated by the Conservation Commission.
§ 702-5. Periodic closing of range.
The range area may be closed periodically for maintenance and/or police firearms qualification.
