Medical Reserve Corps

Mission Statement:
The mission of the MRC is to provide a trained and ready corps of medical professionals and other volunteers to complement and assist the local, existing community emergency response systems when called upon to do so.  Additionally, the program will be available to help our community deal with urgent public health issues, should they arise, and promote and improve our community's health and well being through public education programs.

Each unit is directed by an Advisory Committee, and its subcommittees, and the program operates under the guidelines set forth by the Committee.

What is the MRC?
Medical Reserve Corps units were developed with grant funding through the US Department of Health & Human Services (MRCSG030123).  Program oversight is through the Office of the Surgeon General.  There are two MRC units on Cape Cod -- the Upper Cape MRC housed at Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod MRC housed at the Dennis Church of the Nazarene.

The Medical Reserve Corps is a specialized component of Citizen Corps, a national network of volunteers dedicated to making sure their families, homes and communities are safe from terrorism, crime and disasters of all kinds.  Citizen Corps, AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and the Peace Corps are all part of USA Freedom Corps, created by President George W. Bush in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Who can volunteer?
Anyone can volunteer with the Medical Reserve Corps.  We have people from many various backgrounds who have signed up.  While we are called a Medical Reserve Corps, there are many roles to fill that don't require medical skills.  You would be working with medical professionals, teachers, lawyers, and clergy members, just to name a few.

Providing Safe and Well Information

If you have been affected by a disaster, this website provides a way for you to register yourself as “safe and well.” From a list of standard messages, you can select those that you want to communicate to your family members, letting them know of your
well-being.
Concerned family and friends can search the list of those who have registered themselves as “safe and well.”

The results of a successful search will display a loved one’s First Name, Last Name, an “As of Date”,
and the “safe and well” messages selected.

Ready America

Disaster preparedness is no longer the sole concern of earthquake prone Californians and those who live in the part of the country known as "Tornado Alley." For Americans, preparedness must now account for man-made disasters as well as natural ones. Knowing what to do during an emergency is an important part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count.

Visit the Department of Homeland Security website, www.ready.gov.
There is a wide range of information compiled here that every American citizen should know and take to heart.
And, there's a great interactive site here especially for kids.  This webmaster has gone through the entire presentation and recommends it for parents and other adults as well!  Click on the "Ready Kids" logo and see what Rex is all about.

Or, as a first step, download the Ready Kids Communications Tool

Coastal Hazard Mitigation Planning

Cape Cod is at risk for serious weather events that have great potential to affect our economy and environment. There are things that we, the regional community of Cape Cod, can and should do today that will help reduce likely future damage caused by inevitable weather events.

See the Cape Cod Emergency Preparedness website for details.

The Barnstable Police Department is proud to announce that we have teamed up with a private website named Crimereports.com to provide near-real time crime reporting.

Citizen's can search the town of Barnstable for a variety of types of calls for service or crimes.

Another feature offered by Crimereports.com is an email alert system. Citizen's can sign up to receive alerts regarding specific crimes or calls for service in their neighborhood. They can also choose how often they receive these updates.

In today's age of technology, the Barnstable Police Department recognizes the importance of providing information to the resident's of Barnstable. Rather than posting a non-searchable "Police Log" we feel that the partnership with Crimereports.com will provide a cutting edge "Digital Police Log" that is more user friendly than anything else available to date.

The Barnstable Police Department also recognizes that the "Partnership" with the community works both ways and hopes that this new tool will encourage residents to become more involved with safety in their own neighborhoods.
